| Ok guys, serious question.
My parents and I are discussing the possibility of getting a brand new car on a lease. I've come down to two choices: Kia Soul and Scion tC.
You guys know of any other cars that are five star, good on gas and sporty/sports car around 20k? (MX5, focus st, fiesta st, abarth 500 and Subaru Impreza have all been kicked off the tavle sadly)

| ^I'm on the same boat actually. My budget is $18k though and I'm looking at the Hyundai Accent for starters. But I really don't want to spend my money yet, I'd rather keep saving and get another $6k to buy a Fiesta ST. | |

I was looking at the Fiesta...That thing is not very safe. I did try to get my parents to consider a Hyundai Veloster.

The ford fiesta not safe? Your having a laugh right? That car has a 5 star Euro Ncap rating, and the safety testing on cars here in europe is far stricter. Just for comparison, I had a 60mph crash into a tree in a 2007 Fiat Grande punto, which also had a 5 star euro ncap safety rating. I walked away from that accident with only friction burns to my wrists from when the airbags deployed. And the Fiat is a far lesser car than the fiesta is. Or any recent ford for that matter.

Well, it does have good safety ratings. What I was going off of was the side safety rating (2 of 5) from US News Ratings and Reviews, which to me is a big concern because I have a lot of dNgerous intersections in my areas (and most of the accidents I've seen or heard of were t-bones)

Always check with an official crash testing facility. Also, no car will have a perfect safety score for a side impact. The reason being, there is less car between you and the impacting vehicle. If the car is for yourself, then the Fiesta ST will be the best one for you to go with. Preferably the 3 door version, as they are cheap to run, and cheap on insurance. If it is for you and your folks, then the Ford Focus ST in 5 door trim is the one you want.

You get a much better driving experience with a manual transmission, can shift when you want too, and often get more out of the engine. Just seems odd to me to not learn driving with manual, but in the uk you can not legally drive a manual transmission car if you pass your test with an auto. With a license to drive manual, then we have the choice to drive either.

To answer your question, my parents are just telling me all the time that it's an absolute waste to get a manual for a city commute. It's even at the point where if I ask about getting a manual, they just say "No, we're not getting a manual!" and I have to leave.

| Why should I when I already have a paid-off Impala? I will save my money, no doubt, but I don't need to worry about the new car until the Impala croaks. If my parents try to force me to get a new car, I'll just walk away from the whole thing. | |

| Its pretty common in the US for anyone born after 1990ish to not know how to drive stick. I personally know how just threw being a car person but my experience was only a few times in an old nissan pickup before my dad go rid of it like 9 years ago. That was only when I first started driving and haven't driven stick since. I know many that didn't have any car that was stick to learn, especially any generation that followed mine.
Manual transmissions are much more rare in the states, especially for non sports cars.

Manual transmissions are much more rare in the states, especially for non sports cars. Does seem a little odd, as you get so much enjoyment from a manual transmission. But I guess it is what it is. It is a real shame though. Most cars available here in the UK are available in both, with the majority buying manual. Obelisk, If you are happy with your Impala, than stick with it. I was under the impression from your first post about it, that they was helping you to get a new car. Didn't know you still had the Impala. By the way, if the Focus ST isnt available in Manual; cant they just get a non ST focus? It would be cheaper on initial outlay, and they should be able to get that one in auto.

| I learned to drive manual from videogames. Really simple and it only took like a month to get the hang of it in my real car after I bought it. Manual transmission cars are obsolete in this day and age (just no use for them when modern auto transmissions can do everything for you). But if you're a petrolhead car enthusiast then you can't say no to a manual. Auto daily drivers are too boring to drive unless they're fast. If you're gonna drive a slow car, at least make sure it's fun to drive IMO. | |

I just test drove a Kia Soul+ and I checked out a hot hatch version of the Forte. The Soul is actually a really good econobox and it's got a sport mode (wut?). The Forte I didn't get to test drive because the battery was bad. Both cars are between 18 and 22k and they're really well built (except that odd battery) and the dealer is begging me to buy the black Soul+ in the dealership because it's been there few months

| Yeah, driving a manual was common knowledge like 15 years ago. Now, its just us petrolheads and just like Jeremy Clarkson said, "We're a dying breed."
Also saving up isn't that easy. Right now I have a total of 4 jobs and have no where near enough money to attempt to look at any car and it's not like I am very frugal with money. Then comes the storage if it doesn't replace my daily driver, I only get 1 spot at my apartment complex. I also thought about trading my main car at the moment for something, then comes the whole reliability issue since I put 50+ miles a day on a car. Because of the tons of miles I put on my car for work also keeps me from just modifying what I own currently.
I'm not sure Obleisks situation but if your living with your parents then take advantage and save money!

I just test drove a Kia Soul+ and I checked out a hot hatch version of the Forte. The Soul is actually a really good econobox and it's got a sport mode (wut?). The Forte I didn't get to test drive because the battery was bad. Both cars are between 18 and 22k and they're really well built (except that odd battery) and the dealer is begging me to buy the black Soul+ in the dealership because it's been there few months Be careful Obelisk, that dealer sounds like they already have you on a hook. A dealer will rip you off if they can, as you are just an ATM to them. tl;dr: My father takes every measure possible to keep the dealers from haggling us. We're being strict and talking to only one guy, a 19 year old who works there that we've dealt with before. My dad also has an aggressive customer attitude, and he'll call in and male absolutely sure everything is on his terms. During his last car search, he flat-out told the main group of guys through a friend at the dealership that if they didn't back off, he'd get a car elsewhere. It worked and now nobody at that Toyota dealership pushes him around. In fact, I asked the guy at the Kia dealership to look at my current car and he actually told me to wait until the actual appraiser came back in, and "Those guys in there will sell you short on your old car." He stays on good terms with people, though. I'm no slouch either, and my deafness is an added boon. If I know the route, I tune the dealer out and focus on the car.

| I test drove a bunch of cars yesterday and I was apalled at some of the customer service. I initially liked the Veloster, but got turned off by the lack of performance on the base model (sluggish auto transmission doesn't help). I didn't get to try the Civic or the Fit because the dealer employee blew us off and went to go talk to his buddies. The Volkswagen Jetta seemed good but it suffered from a lack of power.
So right now, the Soul+ is still my top choice... Although I could end up with a Mazda 3 like another guy on this forum, I still have to see what it's like as well as Ford and Dodge. (Nissan's out of the question for now but we'll look)
This got so confusing all of a sudden...So many good cars and so many options.

| Well at your price range, lack of power is a given. | |
