when tuning a RWD do you make the front shocks softer than the rears or vice versa? what about FWD and AWD. thanks in advance

up until now i've been making my front shocks stiffer than my rears on all of my cars. i understand tuning everything else but dampers are still a little foggy to me

It really comes down to personal preference. I keep my damping equal on the front and back, but then again, I tend to drive very balanced FRs. Do a lot of combinations to see which works for you.

id hardly say its a preference lol...nothing changes the feel of the cars in this game like dampers do.

you need to feel out the tires on your front and rear before you can tune.

feel for the rate of compression first and find the right balance for the weight/forces being applied to each axel

-i.e. the numerical difference between bump and rebound

next feel for rebound, make sure when the suspension compresses, it can recover its rigidity without becoming too stiff.
then adjust the bump according to the rebound/bump ratio that works for your car.

once this is done on front and rear make those fine tweaks to tie the front and rear together to get the right balance.

now of course the spring rates are part of this system but generaly are easy to set up...front to rear difference based on wieght distrubution...overall spring rates should add to about 40% vehicle weight give or take depending on the chassis. more if employing down force.

perhaps this explaination is too abstract but hope it helps someone haha

felon i may have to disagree on some of that there....

but its hard to argue with your speed! lol

stock suspensions can still piss off though lolol

^I agree that some stock suspensions are Super-soft and roll a lot but their level of grip is unparalleled. I bet a stock suspension car on two wheels can clear a corner just as fast Razz

mostly your spring rates and those low caster settings.

ive had great results on mid engines with softer front springs then rears.

i also like the way the front tires return to straight ahead with the proper amount of caster...but it is probably a much bigger deal with the caster because i run sim steering. I could see normal steering impove on the cornering with lower caster settings though.

i also try to leave the toe settings at 0. although some chassis are really receptive to a little positive front toe if you want a little more turn in...im very much against negative toe though, im positive anything you gain from negative toe (on an fr or mr) can be tuned out with the right suspension/tire setup.

that i can agree with, tunes can always been improved! its hard to try new/strange settings though once you start to get used to certain kinds of handling feel.
