i would get a miata fersure na chassis best bang for your buck no abs or trac control just u and those little 185 size tires enjoying the road trust me you will never regret it only thing i regret is selling mine!

I heard the AMC Pacer and Gremlin are great cars too so cool.

I love the Gremlin! Quirky little muscle hatchback. I'll see what the nearby dealers have on offer once I get my license stuff done and about 3-5k.

Yeah none of the cars you listed lol.

There are some older Mazdas across from the local college.

An older Mazda isnt an 86, 2000GT, or a Gremlin.
There are older Mazdas everywhere, and im pretty sure you can find a better deal else where.

Miata, if you want my suggestion. Either that or an MR2/Celica. Don't go for an 86 unless you have an obsession and don't mind paying 4-8k for something that's just as good, if not worse than a first generation MR2 for 1-2k. 2000GT's are ridiculously exotic and older than even the very first 240Z's on the road, there's no way you'll pick one up on a budget or at all. FC RX7's are stupid cheap here in Texas as well.

I live in suburban New England, we don't see many of those sporty cars up here.

Uhh, you live in the United States, the abundances of sports cars is just about the same anywhere else in the country.
Older cars of coarse will be harder to find but thats how it is everywhere.
