The USA spec 86 came in three trim levels. There is the DX which is extremly rare as it is slightly worse than an AE85 (SR5 in USA) and was hardly ever sold. The SR5 is basically the AE85 brought over to the states. It has the 4A-C engine with a whopping 87 horsepower. The most common model here. The final model released in the states was the GT-S. It did come with a 4AG engine but it is slightly weaker than the JDM engine as it had to meet fuel emission laws. It went from 128 horsepower to 112. The GT-S also came with an optional LSD. It is also slightly heavier than the JDM spec because of the new bumpers.
The quickest way to see if a car is a GT-S or SR5 from the factory would be the VIN codes. A GT-S will have AE88 (Weird as the chassi still says AE86) and a SR5 will have AE86 (Again weird as the chassi says AE85). Hope all of this information was helpful!

Cool that was helpful indeed. What i dont like bout the gt-s is that they combined trueno front with levin rear. It seems so wrong xD

Wait trueno front levin rear? The trueno and levin are only different in the front, not the rear. Unless you mean hatch and coupe? Either way, the USDM bumpers are completely new and are not found on JDM cars. They are whats called 5 MPH bumpers and are basically just more sturdy than the JDM bumpers at crashes 5 MPH and below (oh boy! ).

Wow they actually are different! The levin lights do look a lot like the USDM trueno ones. Thanks for the picture, that helps clear things up.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure the SR5 model is exactly the same as the 85. The specifics are something like rear drum brakes instead of disc, 87hp carburated SOHC instead of 112 EFI DOHC, a softer suspension setup, no differential, 13 inch wheels rather than 14 inch, etc.
It's cool that he got a hatch though, it's so cool in that style. It seems like the people in Texas are charging 800$ in hatch tax. Do you know how much he paid for his 86?

Yeah it's the carburated SR5 on the 86 Chassis, or thats what the VIN number engraving on the inside of the engine bay says. But it's about 65 hp to the wheels, and i'm not 100% about the wheels, they look to be 13".
I absolutely love the 80's cool blue that it came in! He paid 2500 I believe, the only thing wrong was it had a leaky crank seal which took 5 hours to replace yesterday lol. Next time he comes over i'll make sure to get more pics

Wow, that's a pretty tame price for a hatch, and it's not ever beaten up from what I can tell. So his VIN code says "AE86"? I'd definitely want to see more if it if you can get the pictures.

Yeah, the first four characters are AE86 which is great lol. The previous owner swapped out the original seats for some 1st gen. fabric MR-2 seat which match the interior. The only aesthetic defects are a cracked windshield and dash. Other than that it's in amazing condition! I'll see what I can do about the pictures asap (:

I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news but if the VIN is "AE86" that means the body is entirely SR5. It's common that people think that the GTS's VIN is "AE86" but it's actually "AE88", which goes against all common sense, but whatever. I'd actually be happy that my car's engine matches it's body even if the body is less sporty than the 86/gts. You can check out your friend's VIN on this site:

AGH you just reminded me that my windshield got a chip in it like 4 months ago and I forgot about it, I need to get that filled!

Maybe I was looking at some other code inside the bay then. It did come with the GT-S front bumper though, which is pretty neat.

What should I get for a first car? I want something classic like an 86 or maybe the 2000GT (pfft no) or maybe a Honda. Just something sporty but with mild power and good efficiency.
