PostSubject: Things Gran Turismo does better than Forza   Sat May 10, 2014 1:46 pm

With my long period of playing gran turismo 5, Ive decided that I will basically note down all the reasons why gran turismo is better than forza  motorsport.
Don't worry, for all you forza enthusiasts I will try to make a thread on why forza is better than gran turismo

why gran turismo is better than forza

-Gran turismo has a huge array of cars, ranging from standard to premium cars. It also includes many different versions of the same car (ex. Honda S2000 '01 (US) and Honda S2K (EU) ).

-Gran turismo's physics (honestly) are quite impressive from Forza. If one of the cars' tires were to go on the grass and if the driver does not throttle and steer correctly, the car would most likely spin out.  Now I am not sure if that goes the same for gran turismo 6 but from gran turismo 5 experience, it is a huge pain in the ass which would be expected from a simulator.

-Gran turismo has an option where the driver can change the steering sensitivity on their controller, to match the style of driving that they would use. If it were grip driving the sensitivity would be high while for drifting the sensitivity would be low.

-Now I'm not sure whether gran turismo has a larger decision of tracks than forza, this point will be revised later.

-The weather system on gran turismo is very detailed and brilliant. One could alert the time of day, the day transition speed, cloud visibility, and rain.  The only closest example forza had in this point was forza horizon.

-tire smoke from a car is larger and far realistic than forza.  I could be wrong, Gran turismo could have exaggerated the term of smoke in a racing game.

-alongside a variety of cars, gran turismo also has a larger internationall- known  variety of vehicles.  Forza only has a couple JGTC cars and a few  nascar stock cars, while gran turismo has all of that and go karts, WRC cars, and others. It also had a slight taste of touge vehicles, being the game was created in Japan.

Throughout my weeks of experience with gran turismo 5, I've learnt many things that I thought otherwise about the game. There were many things I saw that took me to surprise, and I compiled them into this thread. I'm sure there are more reasons than what I have so feel free to add to the list.  As the list grows, I like the game even further, even when the survers shut down.

For the tracks, GT6 has 77 course variations in 31 locations if I recall right.

GT still fails to capture the physics of an MR/RR car sliding out of control, as it's much harder to recover from an MR slide than it is with an FR or AWD.

You also forgot to mention that GT touches on more eras of cars, including the 1937 Auto Union Streamline, and 30 years worth of Group C/LMP cars, and the Can-Am cars (Chaparral 2D/2J and Toyota 7.

But other than that, it's very hard to tell GT from reality, and in reviews by major game magazines, GT6 was hailed the gold standard of sim-racing.

I, honestly, cannot relate GT6 to real life.

I'm not a PC simulator fanboy by any means, but I feel like iRacing and other simulators are closer to real life than GT6.

The physics on GT6 still need some work, in my opinion.

^I did point that out, but I feel like for a console sim GT6 does a really good job.

The title should have been "Things GT does better than Forza"

After playing GT5 for the past week offline I can only say I hate the game more and more each day and I will never consider it superior to Forza in any way. I will however explain my reasons at a later time since I can't right now. Await my response.

Here's that thing I said I would write:

-Gran turismo may have a large arrange of cars but keep in mind that the "variants" such as a '91 and '92 Miata are exactly the same car. There is no way PD went through the trouble of modelling the car differently if it looks the same, weighs the same, and has the same engine power. On top of that, the "standard cars" seriously lack detail since they are direct copies of GT4's cars (from 2005 on the PS2!). Having said that, there is little to say about MOST cars in the game (I say most because at least 400 of these cars are well made, 1/3) since there is little to tell one car apart from another, all cars generally sound the same and when driven from a bumper cam it would be hard to distinguish which car you are driving (the physics don't make EVERY car unique to drive).
Bottom line is that the large assortment of cars is an illusion and the game does not offer the "unique driving feel" that each car possesses, or at least not quite as well as Forza does.

-Gran turismo's physics are a hit and miss. On one hand it does the job better than Forza and on the other it doesn't.
Pros: Tire grip seems accurate, track surface, weather and elevation changes feel great, running over kerbs (curbs) has a nice response from the car, suspension movement is great, strong force feedback on wheels, drifting feels slightly more realistic than Forza.
Cons: Aerodynamics are way off (drafting speed is exaggerated), sometimes cars have unnatural understeer while others have unnatural oversteer, NO front tire grip feel (on a wheel) while Forza does an awesome job at it. HORRIBLE engine torque curves (a GT40 should not take 5 seconds to go from 1000 to 5000 rpm in 1st gear!) makes 0-60 launches completely unrealistic unless you do a burnout start.

-Gran turismo does have nice steering sensitivity options, no complaints there.

-Gran Turismo does have more tracks than Forza, however, both games posses tracks that the other game doesn't which is a con for both games really.

-The weather and day/night system on Gran Turismo is overall good but it has flaws, mainly the night time lighting because your headlights have an unrealistically short range and some tracks have you driving blind. The weather system in GT6 is a downgrade form GT5 since the rain effects that could be seen on your windshield in cockpit view were dumbed down considerably. Still good nonetheless since Forza doesn't have a system like that.

-Gran Turismo has better tire smoke than Forza BUT it is largely exaggerated which is bad.

-It is true that GT has more variety in race car categories but some of these classes (like V8 Supercars) have only one or two examples whereas Forza would have a couple of cars for each racing competition class (like 8 V8 Supercars instead of 1 like in GT).

I take back what I said about hating GT5 more and more everyday. The truth is that GT5/GT6 are imperfect games. They do some things very well, and other things very badly (like engine sounds and visual glitches). Forza is not perfect either but overall I found myself enjoying FM4 much more than GT5 (GT6 is still debatable). Partly because I spent most of my time racing with friends and racing on Fujimi Kaido. If most of my friends played on the PS3 instead of the 360 my opinion could have been different.
