TF2 and Garry's Mod aren't very demanding games, they'll run fine on a laptop that's not terrible.

Around that price is what you're looking at to run the most graphics intensive games at 60FPS on a 2560x1440 setup. It's basically the "enthusiast" setup, if you want to play pretty much any PC game out there at 60FPS, and maxed settings you'll need to spend about that much.

I only paid about 550$ for my computer, it runs most of my games at >30fps, 1080p even on max settings so it's good enough for me. I'd say the sweet spot for a standard pc gamer would be more like 1,000$ to play pretty much everything on high settings across a wide range of resolutions.

You wouldn't wont to build my pc, as it was originally built on a budget of £330 over a year ago. And I was only able to do that, because I used hard drives in the build that are 6/7 years old. There are far better parts available, and you don't really want to be spending less than £600 for a gaming capable setup.

This was my pc specs originally

AMD FX-4300 Quadcore 3.8GHz cpu
MSI 970a-g43 motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengeance red PC3-12800/1600MHz
Nvidia Gforce GT630 2gb GDDR3
2x Samsung SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB hard drives
a dvd reader/writer (not really needed anymore on a gaming rig, as windows can be installed from a USB thumbdrive, and games are all available digitally)
A basic case
500watt OCZ CoreXstream power supply

I seriously wouldn't recommend copying the build though, as the CPU just isn't as strong a contender now as it was a year ago. If you go AMD side, then you really need to look at an FX-8320 Octacore. Just don't go for the FX-8350, as it is the same CPU; just factory overclocked to a very slightly higher clock speed. It is something that should be 100% capable to achieve on the 8320 at the stock core voltage.

Recently I have added a Nvidia GTX780 to the system, which alone cost more than my entire pc at £350. Since then I have had to replace the PSU with a Corsair CS750M semi modular for an extra £80, as the graphics card I have needs a 600watt PSU minimum to run properly. I also had to replace the motherboard with an MSI 970 Gaming for a cost of around £80.

If I had the money, and just wanted a new gaming capable pc right now. I would go with an Intel i5 k-series cpu and 8gb of DDR3 1600MHz ram. and a minimum graphics card of a GTX760 or ATI R9 280. Though you would ideally want a GTX780 or ATI R9 290, as you would get longer out of it before needed to replace it.
If I had the money, and wanted a pc capable of rendering video faster, and providing better performance with digital art. Then I would go with an Intel i7 k-series cpu and a minimum of 16gb DDR3 1600MHz ram.

Intel Core i5 4670k 3.4GHz Socket LGA1150 (£167.99)
Corsair H80i liquid CPU cooler (£74.99)
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII RANGER Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) Motherboard (£129.98)
G.Skill RipjawsX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (£126.98)
Seagate Barracuda 3tb hard drive (£74.99)
Nvidia GTX 780 (£350)
Corsair CS750M 80+gold power supply (£71.99)
Corsair Carbide AIR 540 (£100.99)

Total (£1100.91)

That is what I would personally buy right now for gaming on, assuming I had a grand just laying around spare. That price can be brought down a little though by going with a cheaper Z97 motherboard, a GTX760 or ATI R9 280, and using the stock Intel cpu cooler that comes with the CPU. Instead of buying the Corsair H80i liquid cooler. and a much cheaper case. I am only considering that case, as I am very very tempted to do a custom watercooling setup. And the AIR 540 has a ton of space behind the motherboard tray to hide things you don't want on show.

Intel Core i5 4670k 3.4GHz Socket LGA1150 (£167.99)
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII RANGER Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) Motherboard (£129.98)
G.Skill RipjawsX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (£126.98)
Seagate Barracuda 3tb hard drive (£74.99)
AMD R9 280 Gigabyte windforce 3gb GDDR5 (£149.99)
Corsair CS750M 80+gold power supply (£71.99)
basic case (£30)

Total (£751.92)

Christ, $1800 for a good PC?  I thought my Toshiba laptop was decent...It can run Garry's Mod at 60 FPS, as well as TF2 on medium-low settings (Given that the server has good ping)

No, that's just how much a gaming PC costs that will last 4 years minimum without needing an upgrade, and still be able to play games at acceptable levels. Its the graphics card that bumps up the price, but as I pointed out; that price can be brought down. The AMD R9 280 performance wise for example, is between the Nvidia GTX 760 and 770 , and is cheaper. Buy two of them and stick them in a crossfire configuration, and you wont have a problem playing games at decent levels and frame rates for a while.

p.s: Also, don't go by the conversion rate between £ and $. PC parts are very often cheaper in the USA than the UK, so it should work out somewhere between $1100 and $1400 USD (depending on the PC parts store used) for the "higher" spec list.

For anyone who just happens to be buying a new graphics card anytime soon, do yourself a favour and buy the Nvidia GTX 970. With synthetic benchmarks, it is on par with the GTX 780, but is dominating the 780 in terms of actual gaming performance. It is also cheaper than the GTX 780. In UK I can pick one up for £280, my GTX 780 cost me £350. Its the bargain of the century! It is the best card at the moment in terms of bang for buck, and for once Nvidia are not making you give up a kidney for awesome pc graphic performance.

Here is Spitsy, who is an avid drifter on Forza 4/5 and Horizon 2, and on countless pc sims. He is using the Thrustmaster TX wheel with T3PA pedal set, and with the Thrustmaster T8RS (the pc/ps3 version shifter, not the xbox one shifter) shifter while also on pc.

Not the most powerful GPU, but it should run Assetto perfectly. I get over 150fps on my GTX780 @1080p, so you should easily be able to run it at 60fps+ at 1080p on that mobile gpu. I hope you set your fanatec up on it.

p.s I am loving the G27. I think I actually prefer it over the Thrustmaster TX in terms of feel, it seems more intuitive.

Yeah and for $700 there was no way I was passing on that deal.

For use on the pc, it is absolutely worth it. Plus it is PS3 compatible (not ps4 though, according to logitech). Not to mention it is the most proven wheel in terms of reliability, which is why I snapped up the deal mentioned in my other thread. The only downside to it, is the fact it doesn't work on the Xbox platform. If you want a wheel for the 360, then buy the Fanatec CSR Value pack, or the value pack XL for the shifters included. I bought it because it had over £100 knocked off on a black friday deal, and I was desperate to get back into my pc sims.

You cant just throw down like that Obelisk, have to put up your full system specs first lol. Most Toshiba Satellites built in the last couple of years use AMD APU's, usually A6 or A8. They get classed as a "gaming" capable machine, which it is; if you like playing games in glue. The problem is they don't pair them with fast enough ram, something a good APU needs. It is possible to find the occasional i5 model though, which my boyfriends sister just got within the last 4 months. But it doesn't have a dedicated GPU, just uses the iGPU on the i5 itself.

Still, and this goes for a fair few gaming grade laptops. The graphics will have to be turned down, possibly to their lowest settings depending on the game. But Assetto Corsa isn't really all that demanding, so Kraze should find it playable at acceptable levels. Don't forget I was playing it on a GT630 2gb graphics card, the same with project cars. Not ideal, but it was playable with the graphics levels set right.

On on that note, and what I came on here for tonight. My first Assetto Corsa video, lol.

It has been recorded in 1080p @60fps. The green numbers on the top right are from when I was playing the game, and is the FPS count from Nvidia Shadowplay.

Yep, you have the igpu. It is a gpu that is physically on the cpu itself. That is why you cant run assetto.
